New findings by GW researcher break tanning misconceptions: 'There is no such thing as a safe tan'

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

A new study conducted by GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) researchers Edward C. De Fabo, Ph.D., Frances P. Noonan, Ph.D., and Anastas Popratiloff, M.D., Ph.D., has been published in the journal Nature Communications. Their paper, entitled "Melanoma induction by ultraviolet A but not ultraviolet B radiation requires melanin pigment," was published in June 2012.

"This is the first time that UV-induced melanin formation (tanning), traditionally thought to protect against skin cancer, is shown to be directly involved in melanoma formation in mammals," said De Fabo, who is professor emeritus at SMHS. "Skin melanoma is the most lethal of the skin cancers. Our study shows that we were able to discover this new role for melanin by cleanly separating UVA from UVB and exposing our experimental melanoma animal model with these separated wavebands using our unique UV light system designed and set up at GW. Dermatologists have been warning for years there is no such thing as a safe tan and this new data appears to confirm this."

Their research uses a mammalian model to investigate melanoma formed in response to precise spectrally defined ultraviolet wavelengths and biologically relevant doses. They show that melanoma induction by ultraviolet A (320 nm) requires the presence of melanin pigment and is associated with oxidative DNA damage within melanocytes. In contrast, ultraviolet B radiation (280 nm) initiates melanoma in a pigment-independent manner associated with direct ultraviolet B DNA damage. The researchers identified two ultraviolet wavelength-dependent pathways for the induction of CMM and the study describes an unexpected and significant role for melanin within the melanocyte in melanoma genesis.

"Also new is our discovery that UV induction of melanin, as a melanoma-causing agent, works when skin is exposed only to UVA and not UVB radiation. This is especially important since melanoma formation has been correlated with sunbed use as many epidemiological studies have shown. One possible reason for this is that tanning lamps are capable of emitting UVA radiation up to 12 times, or higher, the UVA intensity of sunlight at high noon. Melanin plus UVA is known to cause photo-oxidation, a suspected, but still to be proved, mechanism for the formation of melanoma as we describe in our study," De Fabo said.

Cheap health insurance for college students? Question | Texas car ...

Cheap health insurance for college students?

I live in Orlando, FL and i?m a non-smoking college student. Does anyone know of any cheap health insurance or even health discount plans that I could get on just to cover the cost of my Bipolar disorder meds and possibly a couple of visits to the psychiatrist? Yearly physicals and examinations I can handle, but this psychiatrist that I see is $200.00 a visit PLUS the cost of all of the perscriptions he prescribes to me. HELP!

You can compare quotes from different companies for free at: Usa insurance quotes

Many colleges have health centers on campus and retain a psychiatrist to see students in need. The GPs at the health center on campus (hopefully you?ve got one) may also be willing to write the script and/or just CONSULT with your regular psychiatrist. Wal-Mart covers some common bipolar meds at $4 / script (another option for you). Also, MANY people are eligible for script help for which you can apply at www.pparx.com Some colleges also offer ?student insurance? ? you would be wise to inquire.

Best of luck to you,
~Dr. B.~

Rev. Anthony Lee Gets Tested For HIV In The Pulpit To Promote AIDS Awareness

At Union Seminary in 1998, the Rev. Anthony Lee helped lead a worship service on World AIDS Day. Tony (as he was called back then) described the pressures of violence and poverty, along with AIDS, in his African-American community in Washington, D.C., and called for a holistic medical, social and spiritual cure.

Today, Lee is back in the D.C. area as the founding pastor of a thriving church called Community of Hope, located in Prince George's County. He is again working in a largely African-American community that suffers from rates of HIV/AIDS similar to some countries in Africa.

Nearly half of the 1 million people in the United States infected with HIV are black men, women and children -- even though African Americans make up just 12.6 percent of the population.

Lee is on the AIDS working group for the Prince George's County Executive Health Commission, but his most powerful, effective and radically spiritual work happens within the context of his church.

Four times a year, Lee steps onto the pulpit and gets tested for HIV in front of his entire congregation. It is just one of the ways that Community Of Hope is a place of healing, and Lee offers a model of ministry that every church can learn from.

In connection with the 19th International AIDS Conference that starts on July 22, HuffPost caught up Lee to learn about his church and its Gospel-centered approach to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

How long has Community of Hope been around, and who are the people who worship there?

Community of Hope started six years ago in a night club right on the D.C.-Prince George's border, in an area with some of the worst statistics around violence, schools and HIV/AIDS. We felt that the church was at its best when needs were at their most.

We have a range of folks who are part of the church, including people in great need, working-class, as well as the black intelligentsia. We have people working on their GEDs and we also have a heap of people with Ph.Ds. Everyone is welcome. Our tag line is: We don't care who you are, what you've done, who you did it with. We don't care if you did it last night, or woke up doing it this morning. You are in the right place in the right time to become all that God has called you to become.

Am I right in remembering that the night club was a strip club?

Yeah, the club had strip nights.

And so you would take down the poles and put up pews? How did that work?

[Laughs] We had folding chairs. The funny thing is that we brought in our own sound system because we didn't think their sound system was strong enough. We would put a white sheet over the alcohol, but we couldn't cover up everything, so the vodka sign would be glowing during the service. And we would have church right there.

We weren't intending to start the church in a club, but the deal we had for somewhere else fell through. I was disappointed, but my father in ministry, the Rev. Dr. Granger Browning, was excited.

Rev. Browning told me: "Tony, you don't understand, there are going to to be two groups of people who say the same sentence when you start the church. The 'super holy' people are going to question, "What kind of church would start in a nightclub?" But the people who need to come to church are going say, "Wow, what kind of church would start in a nightclub?"

When was the first time you recognized that HIV/AIDS was an issue you wanted to deal with head-on in your church?

We outgrew the club in about 9 months and we moved into our current space on New Year's Eve, which was our first Sunday, and we did HIV testing that first Sunday. We wanted the community and the congregation to know that the blessing of having a permanent location wasn't just for us to shout -- it was for us to work .

Can you tell me a little bit about your outreach teams and the fact that they hand out condoms?

When you look at the numbers of HIV and AIDS in our area, you can see that they are really bad. So we do testing, we have a barbershop and beauty shop outreach where we leave harm reduction information, we do trainings on HIV 101, and then we also have club tours. That is where our street team goes into the clubs handing out prevention material and condoms. Our tag line in the club outreach is: God Loves You. Love Yourself Enough To Protect Yourself.

What do you say to people who insist that handing out condoms is only encouraging bad behavior?

So, at Community of Hope we preach about abstinence and about sexual purity as the standard. But we also have to deal with the reality that everyone is not living the standard. And we have to give the resources and the information so that, even if they are not going to live up to the standard they are not putting themselves at risk for STDs and HIV.

For us it is a both/and; it doesn't have to be an either/or.

HIV is a preventable disease. We have to get out there and be relevant enough and realistic enough to deal with it. We aren't going to stick our heads in the sand and act as if people aren't having sex and engaging in risky behavior.

You work shows caring about people's actual bodies, that their physical bodies matter, not just their spirits -- that those two parts are related.

In scripture you have Jesus ministering to people where they were in their physical situation. If you look at the miracles, some of them were around food and some around physical healing; and that allowed there to be teaching around the kingdom of heaven and people being able to receive it.

For us it is about dealing with the whole person. Not just this spirit person but dealing with their actual practical reality in life. It is not just HIV stuff, it is school system, it is about addressing the policy issues.

If we don't impact the culture, systems and institutions in which people live, then it is very hard to talk to people about what they are supposed to do and not do in their spiritual lives.

Tell me about that woman I met who looked like she was out of central casting for "Upstanding Black Church Lady". She doesn't have buttons or look like what you might think of an AIDS activist, but she is influential in your HIV work, right?

She runs it. Her name Rev. Laverne Harley, an ordained minister, coming out of the Pentecostal, COGIC [Church of God in Christ] background. She is that kind of old-school, charismatic sister/preacher. But she is also doing amazing work in the community with victims of homicides, homelessness and HIV and AIDS.

She doesn't look like someone who would be out in the trenches, but she is out there at such a level and most of what we do is because of her connectedness and vision.

So tell me why you first decided to get tested in the pulpit?

We realized from the first service that we needed to create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable being tested. Because if you are at church and the church is preaching abstinence, but then you go up and get tested and you're not married, what you are saying is, "Oh, I've been doing something." But what we talk about at Community of Hope is that getting tested is a sign of leadership.

We say that even if you have not had sex in a long time, we want you to get tested so you can help create an atmosphere in which someone who 'got some' last night can go get tested and not feel like people are going to be in their business.

So, that needed to happen from the pulpit on down. So, myself, all my ministerial leadership, all the leaders in the church, get tested. We had to shape a culture where there wasn't a stigma around getting tested.

What happens when someone does test positive?

We have partnership with various full service testing organizations. So it is all confidential. People know that the Pastor is not going to find out if they test positive unless they want him to. So if they do test positive, then our collaborative partners take them right there into a full servie model to walk them throught this process, while also lifting up the church as a resource.

The church is available if they want to reach out and talk to one of us, but it is up to the individual. We don't do professional HIV case management, but we collaborate with people who do.

Our tagline for testing is: Know where you stand. And who you stand on. Get tested, but whichever way it goes, know that you can stand on God.

In the upcoming AIDS Conference there is talk of a vaccine. How do you see your church moving forward?

I'll be going to the conference and following all the pieces. It is a significant crisis for us that we can't afford not to follow what's happening.

Future Proofing Your Mobile Computers ? Barcoding News

How the Features You Select Now Can Protect & Extend Your Investment Years into the Future

Rugged mobile computers deployed to warehouses, DCs and other transportation and distribution environments often aren?t used as long as expected, and as result cost the organization more than expected. Companies typically replace their DC computers after about 3?1/2?years, which is approximately seven months sooner than planned at the start of the deployment, according to a study. Rugged devices can actually last even longer, but are retired prematurely because the processors, software, communications data capture capabilities contained within the rugged housing are considered inefficient or obsolete.

Extending service life increases the value of mobile computers. When life cycles go down, so does the return on investment, and the total cost of ownership (TCO) goes up. The table below illustrates how changes in the replacement cycle impact the TCO for mobile computing deployments. It reflects how much the purchase price of a $3,000 rugged computer used in warehousing and distribution contributes to the annual and monthly TCO. Note that replacing mobile computers after 31/2 years instead of four (which is about the average intended life cycle) increases the annual TCO allocation by $107, or 14.2 percent.

Lost in London: US athletes see 4 hour bus ride

LONDON (AP) ? In the time it took a group of U.S. athletes to get to the Olympic Park from Heathrow Airport they could have reached the birthplace of the games in Greece.

While Heathrow officials were crowing how well they handled their busiest day ever, the four hour bus ride for the athletes from the airport to the Athletes Village showed the logistical challenges London Olympic officials have to overcome.

Mayor Boris Johnson tried to make light of the wayward bus, saying it gave the Americans a great chance to see more of London. But with Heathrow in the far west of sprawling London and the Olympic Park in the east, the challenges of getting athletes and visitors to Olympic venues on time looms large for organizers.

How can i market my stock trading stratagy yeilds big money in ...

Q&A: How can i market my stock trading stratagy yeilds big money in 5years to lump sum for my initial investment

I have a very good stock trading stratagy which will grow as big money in a span of five years. I am willing to sell it for resonable sum which will help as my initial investment to start the game. i can come to their place (at their expense) and give a live proof before taking the money. PLEASE DO NOT ADVISE ?wHY DON?T YOU USE YOUR STRATAGY AND MAKE MONEY FOR INTIAL INVESTMENT? WHICH i WILL DO ONLY IF NO PATRONERS TO BUY MY STRATAGY. INFACT A SUMP SUM WILL SAVE MY INTIAL TIME SPEND TO MAKE THAT MONEY BECAUSE IN THE INITIAL STAGES the growth is slow and picks up after 3 years tremendously. it is really a wonderfull stratagy and not like systems sold in the market . I can prove my ability at your place in front of you in a shortest time to make you realise that it is gold.

Answer:

In order for it to be successful, I believe that you will need some track record.

By track record, I do not mean pointing at past prices and saying what you ?would? do.

I mean that you?ll need to make current market decisions, announce them, and then await the outcome.

If you have such a record, you can attract investors if you so choose to.

Good luck.

(AP) ? Yahoo's restless shareholders let interim CEO Ross Levinsohn know that they won't give him much time to fix the troubled company if he gets the job on a permanent basis.

Levinsohn faced skeptical questioning at Yahoo's annual shareholders meeting Thursday as he tried to convince investors that the embattled Internet company will rebound from years of financial malaise and internal turmoil.

The foibles have depressed Yahoo's stock as the company struggled to find a leader who could come up with a strategy to reverse a decline exacerbated by the success of Internet search leader Google Inc. and social networking leader Facebook Inc.

Levinsohn, who once ran Internet services at News Corp., will be Yahoo's fifth CEO in five years, if the company removes the interim tag from his title, as widely expected. That doesn't include Yahoo's chief financial officer, Tim Morse, who temporarily led the company between the firing of Carol Bartz as CEO last September and the hiring of her replacement, Scott Thompson, in January.

Yahoo dumped Thompson two months ago amid a flap over misinformation on his official biography, providing Levinsohn with an opportunity to prove that he is the right person for the job.

Levinsohn, 48, has made a positive impression so far by closing a long-delayed deal to sell part of its stake in Alibaba Group, one of China's most successful Internet companies. He also negotiated a truce with Facebook, averting a legal fight over patent rights that threatened to poison Yahoo's partnerships with the social network.

But other Yahoo CEOs have gotten off to promising starts that disintegrated into disillusioning letdowns.

The broken turnaround promises of Yahoo Inc.'s past CEOs shaped the testy tenor of Thursday's meeting. The memories of Yahoo's squandered opportunity to sell itself to Microsoft Corp. for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, in May 2008 didn't help the mood either. Yahoo shares fell 11 cents to close Thursday at $15.69.

In a particularly prickly presentation, one longtime shareholder railed against Yahoo for its lack of innovation and compelling content. The Associated Press couldn't verify the identities of the seven shareholders who spoke during a 35-minute question-and-answer session because Yahoo banned reporters from attending the meeting at a Santa Clara hotel. The AP listened to the meeting on a webcast provided by Yahoo.

"You are behind the ball and you have been behind the ball, regardless of which CEO has shown up," the shareholder said. "You don't execute. ... As a consumer, I have given up on this company."

Other shareholders vented at Yahoo for spending too much on executive salaries and on research and development with little to show for it. Levinsohn also got blamed for his predecessors' inability to develop an effective strategy to increase its revenue at a time more advertising is shifting to the Internet.

Yahoo might have faced even more questions if it hadn't set an hour limit for the entire meeting.

In his responses, Levinsohn talked like someone who expected to be running Yahoo for more than just a few months.

Levinsohn repeatedly touched upon his desire to cement Yahoo's position as a "technology-powered media company" that creates some unique content on its own and teams up with a variety of other outlets, ranging from ABC News to the online music streaming service Spotify, to distribute other sources of information and entertainment. Levinsohn believes that combination will enable Yahoo to sell more advertising aimed at a more engage audience, which currently encompasses about 700 million monthly users worldwide.

"We are working hard to clearly define a strategy for this company," Levinsohn said.

Once that is done, he said, Yahoo will reset its budget and determine how big its workforce should be. While Thompson was still CEO in April, Yahoo began laying off 2,000 employees, or about 14 percent of its payroll.

Yahoo gave no indication on when it might name someone permanent as CEO.

Levinsohn wasn't the only new face at Thursday's meeting. Eight of the 11 board members elected Thursday have been appointed in the past five months. One of the recent appointees, New York hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, had threatened to lead a shareholder mutiny if he didn't get a seat on the board.

Yahoo bowed to Loeb's demands in May after he exposed the inaccuracy on Thompson's biography.

Loeb will have a major incentive to ensure the next CEO doesn't dawdle. His hedge fund, Third Point LLC, owns 72 million Yahoo shares ? a 5.8 percent stake in the company.

Yahoo will provide investors a more revealing look at its progress under Levinsohn next Tuesday when it releases its second-quarter earnings.

Finding associations among SNPs for
prostate cancer using collaborative filtering

Rohit Kugaonkar

9:00am Wed. 18 July 2012, Room ITE 325b

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among men. Because of the slow growing nature of prostate cancer, sometimes surgical treatment is not required for less aggressive cancers. Recent debates over prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening have drawn new attention to prostate cancer. Due to the complicated nature of prostate cancer, studying the entire genome is essential to find genomic traits. Due to the high cost of studying all Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), it is essential to find tag SNPs which can represent other SNPs. Earlier methods to find tag SNPs using associations between SNPs either use SNP's location information or are based on data of very few SNP markers in each sample. Our study is based on 2300 samples with 550,000 SNPs each. We have not used SNP location information or any predefined standard cut-offs to find tag SNPs. Our approach is based on using collaborative filtering methods to find pair wise associations among SNPs and thus list top-N tag SNPs. We have found 25 tag SNPs which have highest similarities to other SNPs. In addition we found 16 more SNPs which have high correlation with the known high risk SNPs that are associated with prostate cancer. We used some of these newly found SNPs with 5 different classification algorithms and observed some improvement in prediction accuracy over using the original known high risk SNPs. The classifier can be used in a decision to perform further testing in case of a "yes" answer by the classifier.

Barclays' Diamond accused of misleading inquiry

LONDON (Reuters) - British lawmakers on Tuesday accused Barclays former chief executive Bob Diamond of misleading a parliamentary inquiry into an interest rate-fixing scandal that has forced him to resign and give up bonuses worth up to 20 million pounds ($30 million).

Diamond hit back, calling the comments made by a parliamentary committee "unfair and unfounded".

The affair became a major political issue in Britain this month, after authorities fined Barclays more than $450 million for its part in manipulating a crucial interbank interest rate. Diamond resigned on July 3.

Marcus Agius, the chairman of Barclays when its traders fiddled the rate, appeared before a hostile parliamentary panel as part of its investigation into the row which as caused widespread public anger in Britain.

In 2-1/2 hours of gripping testimony, he acknowledged the central bank chief had played a key role in pushing Diamond out of his job, and described the personal drama behind the scandal.

"I'm not happy to be where I am, as you can imagine," Agius told the panel in a quiet, clipped voice. "It's very difficult as you go back to say what you would have done differently."

Agius was the first Barclays executive to quit when the scandal erupted but that was not enough to protect the hard-charging Diamond, who was forced out of the 300-year-old bank a day later.

Agius, a Cambridge and Harvard educated pillar of the banking establishment, has agreed to stay on as executive chairman to find a successor to Diamond, who testified in parliament last week.

The panel pressed Agius repeatedly on what it saw as inconsistencies between Diamond's evidence last week and the contents of a letter from the financial watchdog to the bank, which was released at the start of Tuesday's hearing.

"LACK OF CANDOUR"

"It will look to us, and frankly it will look to everybody listening, like another example of a complete lack of candor to parliament by the chief executive of Barclays," said committee chairman Andrew Tyrie.

In a tense exchange, John Mann, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour party, said: "He has calculatedly and deliberately misled this parliamentary committee ... Mr. Diamond has been misleading this committee, hasn't he?"

Agius replied: "I can't speak for his testimony."

Diamond, in a letter to Tyrie, later said the accusations were unjustified: "Having watched the committee's session today, I was dismayed that you and some of your fellow committee members appear to have suggested that I was less than candid with the committee last week," he wrote in the letter, which was published by the BBC.

"The comments made at today's hearing have had a terribly unfair impact on my reputation, which is of paramount concern to me."

Neither Diamond nor Agius stand accused of individual wrongdoing in the manipulation of rates.

As lawmakers piled criticism on him, Agius looked tense at times, blowing out his cheeks and shaking his head in disbelief. He interrupted one committee member sharply at one point to correct the pronunciation of his surname.

Shedding light on what went on behind the scenes, Agius said Diamond resigned after the central bank chief summoned Barclays executives and made it clear that their colleague had to go.

"We explained what had happened," said Agius, who visited Diamond at his house in London. "He was utterly depressed as you can imagine. The conversation was not long.

"He asked for time to talk to his family, and we left confident that if he hadn't already made the decision, that he would make the right decision."

BONUSES LOST

Diamond's pay-off has been the subject of intense speculation in a country where anger with the culture of bankers strikes a popular chord. One of the world's richest bankers, Diamond took home 17 million pounds last year alone and has earned at least 120 million pounds since he joined the board in 2005, according to Manifest, a corporate governance group.

In a separate statement, Barclays quoted Diamond as saying he hoped his decision would help the bank move on.

"The wrongful actions of a relative few should not detract from the outstanding work that Barclays employees carry out each day on behalf of clients and customers around the world," the American banker said.

Diamond will still get a year's pay and a cash payment instead of a pension, all worth 2 million pounds, Agius said.

Letters released on Tuesday showed the Financial Services Authority - Britain's financial watchdog - had long shared its concerns with Agius about his bank's behavior and culture.

"The cumulative effect ... has been to leave us with an impression that Barclays has a tendency continually to seek advantage from complex structures or favorable regulatory interpretations," said an April 10 letter sent by FSA Chairman Adair Turner to Agius.

Turner said the concerns had also been raised by Andrew Bailey, the head of banking supervision at the FSA, while attending a Barclays' board meeting in February.

In his testimony last week Diamond said: "I don't remember anything ... I didn't brief before this on the February meeting."

FIRM TONE

When asked about the letter, Agius said: "I don't regard this as damning. I regard this as a firm letter from our regulator." He added however he had never received a letter that harsh from a regulator and described his relationship with the Financial Services Authority as "strained".

More than a dozen other banks are now expected to be drawn into the scandal. The London Interbank Offered Rate underpins transactions worth hundreds of trillions of dollars worldwide.

Mervyn King, the Bank of England governor, has declined to comment on his involvement in Diamond's resignation but he told the BBC in an interview recorded before Agius' testimony that it was time to change the way Britain's banking system worked.

"We don't have enough banks, and those banks that we have, have become too big and they dominate the sector in a way that's rather undesirable," he said.

Libor, or the London interbank offered rate, is compiled from estimates by large international banks of how much they believe they have to pay to borrow from each other. It is used for $550 trillion of interest rate derivatives contracts and influences rates on mortgages, student loans and credit cards.

The rates submitted by banks are compiled by Thomson Reuters, parent company of Reuters, on behalf of the British Bankers' Association.

Ouya game console raises $2 million on Kickstarter, doesn't know what to do with it

When we first detailed the Ouya $99 Android-based game console yesterday, we had a feeling it would become a hot property over at Kickstarter. But still, there's no way we anticipated this: the project has just raised $2 million in its first day, having sped past its initial $950,000 goal within a record-breaking 12 hours. Now, in an email to backers, the project has asked for feedback on its "stretch goals" -- in other words, what it should do if it makes even more cash and is able to set its sights on loftier ambitions. If you're a backer then check your email, if you're a potential backer then check the source link, and if you're a traditional VC then weep.

Thousands protest in Mexico, alleging vote fraud

Marco Ugarte / AP

Wearng a Guy Fawkes mask, a protester holds a banner that reads in Spanish, "No to another fraud," during a march in Mexico City on Saturday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 7:50 a.m. ET: MEXICO CITY -- Tens of thousands of protesters, many holding hand-written?placards, marched through the Mexican capital on Saturday against President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto, accusing him of buying votes and paying off TV networks for support.?

The demonstrators, including students, leftists, anarchists and union members, shouted slogans criticizing Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, and the electoral authority.

"Mexico without the PRI," "Mexico voted and Pena didn't win," and "If there is an imposition, there will be a revolution," chanted demonstrators, according to Spanish-language?Mexican newspaper La Jornada.

The PRI previously ruled Mexico for seven decades, during which time it was accused of rigging elections and repressing protesters.

Many carried?signs reading, "Pena, how much did it cost to become president?" and "Mexico, you pawned your future for 500 pesos."?

Mexico's president-elect shrugs off claims of vote-buying, coercion

"The PRI threatens many people and buys others with a couple of tacos," said Manuel Ocegueda, a 43-year-old shop worker participating in the march.?

There were also demonstrations in Cancun, Puebla and Ciudad Juarez.

Accusations of vote-buying began surfacing in June, but sharpened later when people rushed to grocery stores on the outskirts of Mexico City to redeem pre-paid gift cards worth about 100 pesos ($7.50). Many said they got the cards from PRI supporters before the elections.

Officials put the size of the crowd that reached its central Zocalo plaza at 50,000.

In an interview with NBC's Spanish language network Telemundo, the apparent winner of Mexico's presidential election, Enrique Pena Nieto, spoke out about the challenges he faces. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

Pena Nieto won the July 1 election by almost 7 percentage points, according to the official count, returning the PRI to presidential power after 12 years in the wilderness. He?is due to take power in December, replacing Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party, or PAN.

The constitution barred Calderon from running for a second term. The PAN candidate, Josefina Vazquez Mota, finished third, with many voters dissatisfied over relentless drug violence and sluggish growth.?

Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador finished in second place, but has refused to concede, accusing Pena Nieto of stealing the presidency.?

Party's checkered past challenges Mexico's president-elect

Pena Nieto denies any wrongdoing and PRI officials say they could sue Lopez Obrador over the accusations.?

Lopez Obrador was runner-up in 2006 as well, but by a much closer margin, after which he also said there had been fraud and led major protests that disrupted the capital city for months.?

He has so far stayed away from protests this year, but said he was collecting evidence of fraud to give to officials.

On Saturday, Lopez Obrador called on the PAN to join forces with him to file a legal challenge to the election.

Mexico's electoral tribunal has until September to evaluate any complaints and officially name Pena Nieto as the next Mexican president.

In a dramatic comeback for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, Enrique Pena Nieto claimed victory in Sunday's presidential election in Mexico. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Pena Nieto, 45, a former state governor, promises to reform Mexico's oil industry and labor laws to kick-start growth and boost security spending to reduce the country's high murder rate.

Calderon has congratulated Pena Nieto on his electoral victory, along with dozens of world leaders.?

Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

AP source: Yankees tell Reggie to steer clear

(AP) ? The New York Yankees have told Mr. October to stay away this summer.

The Yankees want Reggie Jackson to steer clear of the clubhouse and team events following his pointed remarks about Alex Rodriguez and several former stars, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.

The Hall of Famer will lay low for several weeks, the person told the AP on condition of anonymity because there was no formal announcement. Jackson was not disciplined or fined, and will remain as a special adviser to the Yankees.

ESPN initially reported Jackson would be indefinitely absent from the Yankees.

Jackson recently was quoted by Sports Illustrated as saying some of Rodriguez's statistics were tainted because the Yankees slugger had admitted using performance-enhancing drugs. Jackson has spoken to Rodriguez since then to explain his comments.

Jackson also said he didn't see Gary Carter, Kirby Puckett and others as Hall of Famers.

The MVP of the 1977 World Series with the Yankees was told not to travel to Boston last weekend for New York's four-game series at Fenway Park to avoid becoming a distraction. The Yankees will contact Jackson when they want him back on the scene, the person said.

Jackson was set to be in Kansas City for the All-Star game festivities, including the home run derby Monday night.

Jackson told SI that A-Rod was a friend, adding: "But I think there are real questions about his numbers. As much as I like him, what he admitted about his usage does cloud some of his records."

The former star also said there were several players that he didn't view as worthy of Cooperstown.

"I didn't see Kirby Puckett as a Hall of Famer. I didn't see Gary Carter as a Hall of Famer. I didn't see Don Sutton as a Hall of Famer. I didn't see Phil Niekro as a Hall of Famer. As much as I like Jim Rice, I'm not so sure he's a Hall of Famer," Jackson was quoted by SI.

Carter died in February and several former players have criticized the timing of Jackson's remarks. The person indicated Jackson was reaching out to the families of Carter and Puckett, as well as the Hall of Famers he mentioned.
