My First Blog - Operation Muffin Top - Connecticut News

Hello everyone!!

My name is Jamie and this is my very first blog! I?m so excited to be part of this!
Here are a few things about myself:

I am a rising sophomore at Greenwich High School. I participate in two sports at the High School (soccer, basketball), and I?ve been working out at Carozza Fitness for about a year now.

I started at Carozza in the Summer 2011 in order to get in conditioning shape for fall soccer. The challenge that the training presented was quite an awakening, but it was totally worth all the six-thirty AM wake up calls from my mom on Sunday mornings. I could feel my body growing stronger with every box jump, TRX body row, kettlebell swing and manmaker. I look forward to learning how to flip truck tires like Ryan Lochte.

My freshman year I played Freshman Soccer and JV and Varsity Basketball. I feel passionately about sports and athletics, and especially about competing. I love the adrenaline rush, heart-pounding intensity, and even feeling sore the day after.

I believe in hard-core training if you want to be the best, and I can say from personal experience that especially at the high school level, conditioning and fitness is what separates the players who start and the players that play the bench. Some people don?t realize how competitive teenagers can get about positions and playing time, and the best way to avoid all of that nonsense is to be the best at what you do?and that?s where training and dedication comes in.

In future blogs I?ll talk about a few of my personal experiences, like the year I was a vegetarian. I?ll also give some of my opinions, like my view of girls sports at the high school level and beyond.

I?m not a particularly inspiring person who gives incredible advice, but I do think that if people want to hear about what teenagers think about sports and training, I can tell them exactly what they need.

Until next time?

You miss 100% of the shots you don?t take.

Murray routs Federer to win tennis gold

Britain's Andy Murray demolished Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the Olympic men's final on Sunday to win his first gold medal and avenge his Wimbledon final defeat against the world number one.

Just four weeks after breaking down in tears when Federer shattered his hopes of a first Wimbledon title, Murray returned to Centre Court to rout the Swiss great in just one hour and 56 minutes.

Murray, who has denied Federer a coveted first singles gold, could yet finish the Games with two gold medals as he will be back in action in the mixed doubles final with partner Laura Robson against Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus later on Sunday.

It is the greatest moment of Murray's career to date and just reward for an astonishing display that must rank alongside the best ever seen on the sport's most hallowed court.

The 25-year-old Scot, beaten in three Grand Slam finals by Federer, has been in superb form all week, but even he can't have dreamed he would win gold like this.

Not only did the world number four do it by beating the Swiss for the first time since 2010, Murray also handed the 17-time Grand Slam winner his heaviest defeat in a major final since Rafael Nadal thrashed him for the loss of just four games in the 2008 French Open final.

For Federer, a doubles gold medallist with Stanislas Wawrinka in Beijing in 2008, this final was meant to be the crowning glory of his career.

Instead, Federer, who will be 35 by the time the Rio Games are in full swing in 2016, may wonder if he will ever get a chance to win the Golden Slam of all four majors and singles gold.

Murray had hoped the final would be staged with the Centre Court roof open as he felt his Wimbledon defeat was in part due to Federer thriving after a switch to indoor play when rain hit when the match was level at one-set all.

He got his wish as the heavy rain that lashed the All England Club earlier in the day relented just before the scheduled start.

And when Murray gave Federer two break points in the opening game, his response to the crisis, a series of perfectly-placed winners, was symbolic of his impressive form this week.

The Scot's new-found maturity and increased muscularity are a potent package and he set about Federer with controlled fury in the sixth game.

A fine serve from Federer saved the first of two break points, but Murray came up with a searing return on the next and the Swiss could only direct his forehand into the net.

Everything that Federer threw at Murray was sent back with interest by the Scot, who clinched the first set with a second break when he smashed a backhand winner down the line.

Murray had taken the first set in the Wimbledon final as well before missing a chance to break in the second and then running out of steam.

He wasn't going to make the same mistake again.

In the second game of the second set, Federer put an easy smash into the net before the Scot enjoyed a slice of luck as two net cords in quick succession went his way to secure the break.

Federer tried to stem the tide in the next game, an epic struggle that featured six break points for the Swiss. But Murray wouldn't be denied and found the right response on each occasion.

The Swiss great had never been given such a torrid time on his favourite Centre Court. He looked shell-shocked by Murray's assault and served a double-fault on break point in the next game to give the Scot his eighth successive game.

With the second set in the bag, Murray kept his foot on the gas in the third and delivered the knockout blow when he produced a stunning winner to break for a 3-2 lead.

Federer had nothing left in response and Murray sealed the win with two thunderous aces before clambering into the players' box to embrace his family and backroom staff.

Intensity pervades Urban Meyer's first preseason practice with Ohio State football

If the tenor set by Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer on the first day of preseason practice is any indication about what the coming season holds, the 2012 campaign will be an intense one.

Meyer led veteran OSU players in an early-morning workout at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center that included stretching, running and drill work, according to an OSU release. Freshmen and upperclassmen walk-on players took part in their first fall practice under Meyer at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Meyer, who was hired Nov. 29, begins preparations for his first season with OSU after stints at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida.

Meyer was not made available following his first-ever preseason practice at OSU, but sophomore cornerback Bradley Roby confirmed the arrival of a new era in OSU football from players? perspectives when he said the morning session was more intense than what the team had experienced under former head coaches Jim Tressel and current OSU defensive coordinator Luke Fickell.

?You can tell just by practice. It was totally different than coach Tressel,? Roby said. ?Just the whole intensity of practice ? It?s more urgent, more intensity. Not more competitive, but (coaches) stress the competitiveness so that brings out more.?

Roby, who also called the Friday practice high-paced and crisp, said it was Meyer?s newly assembled coaching staff ?being on you more? that brought the intense showing from players.

Sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller, appearing less camera-shy and open to discussion with the media, said that his teammates came together during the summer.

Miller, who rushed for 715 yard and seven touchdown while passing for 1,159 yards and 13 touchdowns during his freshman campaign, also credited the coaching staff for changes in his physique.

?I feel a lot (different). My body?s changing, my attitude,? he said. ?I had a talk with the coaches about, like, ?how can I be a better leader??

In keeping with the theme of intensity, Miller also said he had some words of encouragement for his teammates before the early-morning practice.

?Let?s go man,? Miller said. ?We?re not here to lounge around.?

New Season, New Numbers?

Three players, including Roby, are wearing new numbers this fall.?

Roby, who sported the No. 25 jersey last year, is wearing No. 1 for the 2012 season.?

Additionally, senior linebacker Ross Oltorik is wearing the No. 20 jersey and freshman defensive lineman Se?von Pittman will sport the No. 95 jersey.?

OSU begins its 2012 season Sept. 1 against Miami (Ohio) at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff, set for 29 days from Friday, is scheduled for noon.?

PRowl Public Relations: MBA Programs Add Public Relations ...

Perhaps one of the reasons that many do not understand what public relations actually does for businesses is that in 2010, 80 percent of MBA programs did not have coursework that gave students specific training on the role that PR plays in strategic communications.? In recent years, business schools have recognized that PR is no longer a specialized skill.? It is an important skill for all business professionals in a leadership role.

PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) has aided the process for business schools to add PR coursework by developing a curriculum to distribute to schools.? Paul Argenti, a professor at Dartmouth College?s Tuck School of Business, was the professor who developed the program. His college will be one of five in the nation where the program will be tested in the upcoming school year.?

The business schools of Northwestern, Maryland, Quinnipiac, and University of Texas El Paso are the other four schools that have seen the need for PR to be a part of their MBA programs and have signed on to be a part of the pilot program testing PRSA?s curriculum.? After the pilot this year, PRSA will develop a guide for business schools to use to unveil new PR programs in the 2013-2014 school year.?

As a student strongly interested in corporate communications, I am thrilled to see that top business schools are expressing a need for PR to be incorporated in their programs.? I believe this is a step in the right direction for the PR industry ? when working for a company with upper-level management who have been educated on the importance of PR, the activities of our department will likely have stronger support. ?

Do you also think incorporating PR into MBA programs is good for the profession? Let us know!

Business Success Starts with Great Customer Service | Business 2 ...

Business Success Starts with Great Customer ServiceBusiness success has always been elusive, but, as the economy tightened, businesses stepped up their search for the next trick to give them a competitive advantage. Maybe social media marketing would work? Or increasing appeal to a specific demographic? But, these marketing tactics can be very expensive and the ROI is often speculative.

Other businesses tried to ?shrink to greatness? thinking business success came from cutting costs to a minimum. These efforts are often misguided, since cutting costs often translates to cutting corners that force customers into the arms of a competitor. Cutting costs may also mean cutting your promotional expenses which amounts to cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Another popular solution to create business success is copying what competitors do under the mistaken notion that, if competitors are making money doing something, you should do it to. This, in effect, keeps you swimming in the red ocean ? never a good thing.

The solution for business success is right under your nose ? providing great customer service.

No matter how well you manage your marketing and promotion, poor customer service will TANK your business success. In fact, the more customers generated by your marketing efforts, the GREATER your loss if your customer service fails. The days of treating customers as if they don?t matter are gone. In today?s competitive markets, you have to prove yourself to customers everyday. That?s because 5 times as many people complain when they get bad service as promote you when they get great service.

Thus, negative word of mouth travels 5 times faster and farther than positive. Disappointed customers don?t just complain to you ? they complain to anyone who will listen. And, they might keep complaining for years. Twitter is the perfect vehicle for customers who feel they received poor customer service and complaints are one of the most re-Tweeted types of posts. Twitter is also a darling of traditional media outlets, who love to find a customer complaint and amplify it through their vast broadcast networks.

And, most folks who experience poor customer service will never say anything ? they?ll just leave and never come back. Resting on past laurels also doesn?t help much as customers expect ever-increasing improvements in service quality and additional services.

I mean, think about hotels. It used to be fine if you had a nice clean room and good TV reception. Then, people demanded premium TV channels and designer rooms, because EVERYONE had a nice clean room and good TV reception. Now, hotels compete on branded amenities, such as Westin?s ?Heavenly Bed?.

And, ensuring great customer service is just as much a part of marketing as your TV advertising and social media presence. In fact, if your customer service (or product quality) isn?t up to snuff, your efforts are better spend in fixing these problems rather than publicizing your offering.

Remember, the rule of 5 I mentioned earlier. The more visibility your create while failing to provide good products and service, the more likely complaints will surface and these complaints are increasingly likely to go VIRAL.

How do I insure great customer service, you might ask? And here?s the answer.

1. Talk to customers

Don?t just ask customers what they liked and didn?t like about your service. Track sales to see whether customers stop coming to your store or buying your brand. Monitor what customer say about you on Facebook and Twitter.

When customers say something wasn?t good, fix the problem right away and make it up to them. The trick to handling service failure is:

  1. communicate ? don?t just do things internally, let customers know they?re valuable and what you?re doing to fix things.
  2. make the customer whole ? make sure they are at least as well off as if you hadn?t failed them.
  3. do it fast ? the longer customers are dissatisfied, the bigger your problem.
  4. establish a process that consistently uncovers problems and charges specific individuals with fixing the problem.
  5. fix underlying problems to reduce future service failure.

2. Do a SERVICE AUDIT

A service audit tracks customer experiences from the beginning of the sales cycle through post-purchase issues such as returns. Where do problems or delays arise? What can be done to fix these problems? How can you improve the customer experience? Remember, according to Deming, most problems are SYSTEM problems, not human laziness or stupidity.

3. Keep your promises

No one likes it when you don?t deliver on your promises. You don?t seem trustworthy and they think everything you say is a lie ? witness consumers don?t believe anything they hear on commercials. It?s much better to deliver MORE than you promise than to not keep your promise EVERY time. People are thrilled when they get more and angry (possibly lawsuit angry) when they don?t get what they thought you promised. Remember, all marketing is about perceptions ? what THEY think you promised ? not on reality ? what you really promised. The distinction may help you in a lawsuit, but not in the court of public opinion.

4. Cater to internal customers

Internal customers are your employees. These folks are critical, especially if they?re forward facing ? interacting directly with customers. Poor employee morale translates into poor customer service. Moreover, employees see and hear what?s going on in your stores, hotels, restaurants ? They can give you valuable, free feedback on improving your service before things get out of hand. But, they won?t do that if they don?t like you.

5. Employee empowerment

Forward facing employees are in a perfect position to fix problems that occur on the spot. Say a guest at your hotel finds their room wasn?t cleaned to their satisfaction. Who do they complain to? The front desk, of course. So give front desk employees leeway to discount room charges, give out free meals, etc to appease dissatisfied customers.

Creating business success isn?t hard when your focus on great customer service first. Ideas? Suggestions? Gripes? Please post below.
