Publishing Your Online Newsletter: Monetizing Your Newsletter By ...

Newsletter Advertising

As you build your subscriber base, you?ll also be able to justify charging other marketers or businesses to advertise in your newsletter.

However, there are advantages and disadvantages to running ads.

Advantages:

1. You generate an extra source of revenue, which helps recover hosting and publishing costs.

2. You can market your own products or services.

3. You can potentially add value to your readers, by pointing out related products that will benefit them.

Disadvantages:

1. If you abuse your relationship with your readers by publishing too many ads, you might offend them and ultimately be seen as spam.

2. Your readers might question how sincere you are or how much content your newsletter contains, if you focus too much on marketing products and not on producing quality content.

3. If you?re not selective about what is advertised in your newsletter, you also risk your reputation within your niche and/or marketing community.

Types Of Advertising You Can Sell

Short sponsor ads: Ads that other marketers pay a one-time fee to include within your newsletter, often presented as someone who ?sponsors? the publication.

Interstitial ads: These are ads that appear between one page and another, which are relevant to the content itself.

They?re sometimes known as ?transition ads?.

Solo e-mail ads: Since you should be building a list of subscribers through your newsletter, you can also use that list as a marketing asset. One option is to charge other marketers within your niche to send a promotional e-mail to your subscribers.

If you have a proven ability to write e-mails that convert, you might also be able to charge extra to write the ads!

How Much To Charge For Advertising

The big question, of course, is how much you should be charging for advertising space.

Short answer: don?t sell ads cheaply.

The ideal pricing is generally about $10-$25 per 1,000 impressions (CPM).

The larger your list of readers, the easier it will be to justify higher advertising rates.

Tip: As long as you structure your pricing in a way to makes it fair for your advertisers and allows them to see a return on their investment, you should have no problem getting repeat business.

Focus on long-term relationships, instead of short-term profits.
