Gaming Around: Ratchet & Clank ? Good Comics for Kids

I love playing video games in the limited free time I have in between being a librarian and a parent of young children. Time is fleeting, but if I can play a game by myself for 30 minutes here and there or with my seven-year-old son, it?s great to have the opportunity to play. Video games and comic books have always had a connection with each other, from the days of the short-lived comic book series Atari Force (no, seriously!) published by DC Comics, to Archie Comics? long-running Sonic the Hedgehog monthly comic book, to Marvel?s HALO graphic novels. Comic book heroes can make for some great video games?such as the Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City video games?and in return, video game heroes can make for some great comic books. In the future, we?re going to be exploring some of the best video game tie-in comic books for kids and teens currently available.

I was happy to see that WildStorm/DC Comics, in conjunction with Sony Entertainment, published a graphic novel in 2011 called Ratchet & Clank. The graphic novel is tied in with the popular video game series of the same name. The first Ratchet and Clank game was originally released in 2002 by Insomniac Games for the Playstation 2 game console, and the series has had multiple sequels over the years on the Playstation 3 console. Every game in the series has been released exclusively for the PlayStation family of consoles owned by Sony Computer Entertainment.

The game series features the space adventures of Ratchet (an adventurous, orange-colored, cat-like alien with a penchant for fixing things) and Clank (his diminutive robot companion). Together they regularly save the galaxy from evil. The comic book story was written by senior writer TJ Fixman from Insomniac Games, who is no stranger to the characters: He wrote the stories for four Ratchet & Clank games, and it?s great that Insomniac Games? lead writer is there to make sure the graphic novel feels just like yet another adventure.

As the story begins, Ratchet and Clank are recuperating on the planet Veldin after their adventures from the game Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Their rest and relaxation is short-lived: The newly appointed President of the Galaxy, Qwark?the bumbling coward superhero?shows up to tell them that planets are starting to disappear and he needs their help. When the planet Veldin disappears with Ratchet and Clank on it, they have no choice but to figure out who?s kidnapping planets. Soon they?re on the run along with the aid of characters from the video game series, including fan favorites Sasha Phyronix, Talwyn Apogee, and the robots Cronk and Zephyr.

The story is a lot of fun and sure to appeal to the fans of the video game series. I wanted to see Ratchet use really fun and outrageous firearms, as he does in the games, like my favorite, the Plasma Beast ? which is a gun that shoots out a creature that fights for you ? but I was sadly disappointed. There are a couple of weapons, but not anything that stands out other than the Omniwrench and a Combuster. Violence in the book is practically G-rated. There are no deaths, and all the destruction of any kind happens to robots. Also the only swear words are an occassional ?Oh, Crap? that Ratchet says several times.

I do think that a one page short bio of the characters should have been included to let newbie readers who never played a Ratchet & Clank game know who the characters are. I have only been exposed to the series by the games A Crack in Time, Tools of Destruction, and All 4 One, and I had some difficulty figuring out who was who. Granted, I?ve never played the games completely through and have been progressing at the level of, well, a 7-year-old who doesn?t play the games all the time because his parents don?t want him playing them all the time. I never had a PS2, so I have never played the original games.

Also, I have a complaint about the art. I do think that Adam Archer did a great job?the cover art by the Creaturebox is what really draws the reader in, with a highly animated style that helps to encompass the fun and adventurous side of this game series. Sadly, Adam?s artwork is nowhere near as kinetic and expressive. Also, the coloring between Jonny Rench and Tony Avina is disproportionate throughout the book. In the first few chapters, the coloring is absolutely gorgeous, and Ratchet appears lightly inked with an almost airbrushed quality to his look. In other chapters of the graphic novel, the artwork?s coloring is flat and thickly inked and is distracting.

For fans of the video game, though, you can?t get any better than having Insomniac Games? TJ Fixman writing a new Ratchet and Clank adventure. All that?s missing is a video game controller. For those who haven?t played the game series and were intriqued by the story, despite the lack of the ?Who?s Who? roster this book needed, there?s a lot of good fun sci-fi adventure here, mixed in with plenty of humor. By the end I?m sure you?ll be a fan of the series.

Until next time, game on!

Better Gaming Bureau ? The Fastest Growing Video Game ...

One man drops to the bottom from the top, and another takes the throne as the competition rolls on.We usually start this blog with the biggest winner, but we had a huge loser this week who deserves to be mentioned. After having an incredible Week 2 in the competition that propelled him to the top spot, Anthony put up a big fat ZERO this week by completing absolutely no games in the past 7 days. In fact, he only put in about 3 hours total into the competition in the form of Sleeping Dogs. But until he decided to stop taking a slumber himself, his points will remain stagnant.

Taking his place on the top spot is the Sworrior himself. Barry had a very productive week as he manipulated time in an attempt to recapture his Sega Genesis Gays, but wound up just completing Braid instead for 91 points. Once back in current times, Assassin?s Creed Brotherhood was wrapped up for an additional 32 points. Those two games were good enough to put Barry as the King of the Mountain for at least a week.

Securing the number 2 spot was EverydayChris. He still has a ton of points pending in the background, but they do not count until the games are finished. What he did finish this week was Rayman: Origins. After 10 hours of Co-Op fun with his little partner, EverydayChris put 100 points on the scoring ledger. He can put up some huge numbers at any time, but has he bitten off more than he can chew? Remember, its a 50 point penalty if a game goes incomplete at the end of the contest. We?ll see if he has what it takes to wrap all his declarations up.

This upcoming week will wrap up the first month of the Game Completion Competition and the front runners should start to make their way to the top. What will be declared next? Who will complete the most games this month? Why am I asking you questions? Find out all this and more as the BGB GCC continues!

Gated Community Carmel

  • A few minutes from Carrasco, in a unique setting, Carmel is found. This place was conceived as a space that combines the tranquility of the countryside and the comfort of the city.

carmel uruguay 300x225 Gated Community Carmel In 1998 an investor group of Argentineans, English and Uruguayans inspired in the real estate developments of Los Angeles and Miami, decided to create a gated community that combines an unmatched architectural design with the latest technology regarding services. Carmel was created with a complete and modern infrastructure looking for a new lifestyle based on security and tranquility.

The design and planning of the lots and streets of the gated community respect the environment following the undulations of the land. In the gated community Carmel one perceives the nature?s tranquility in a surrounding of green spaces and gardens.

In this exclusive gated community the plots are surrounded by trees and lakes and have been planned and designed to preserve the privacy of each resident.

Carmel is set on 34 hectares, where only 60% of the area is destined to the 105 plots which are from 1000 to 2600 square meters. The remaining 40% is distributed between green areas, lakes, roads and spaces for recreation.

carmel 300x225 Gated Community Carmel The Club House has an ample reception with views of the lake with a comfortable living room, a warm fireplace, library, kitchen and bathrooms. entrada carmel 300x225 Gated Community Carmel One of the most important aspects to consider when choosing where to live is security. Presently the possibility of raising our kids in a warm and safe environment is highly valued. Carmel makes it possible. It has a surveillance system that allows residents to have a life with total freedom, leaving the car keys in the ignition and their front doors unlocked without any type of problems. There are two types of alarms: one on the perimeter with sound and lights and one on each plot.

Both are monitored from the entrance control by a team of professionals. Carmel gated community also offers its habitants transportation with a system of private taxis and mini vans which have a schedule and its cost is included in the maintenance fees.

Mission: Reunite Purple Hearts with recipients' families

NBC's Ron Allen has the story of how one man is making it his mission to recover Purple Hearts and return them to the families of the recipients.

Craig Stanley, NBC News writes

On Christmas Day in 2009, Vermont National Guard Capt. Zachariah Fike received a gift from his mother, Joyce ? a Purple Heart medal that she found in an old antique store.

But instead of displaying the medal in his home, Zac, who collects antiques, immediately took to the Internet. He began researching the name engraved in the?brass finish ? Corrado Piccoli ? in hopes of returning the medal to its rightful owner.

?[For] a lot of these families, it?s closure,? Fike says of the Purple Heart medal. ?It?s the only tangible thing that the families received after their loved one died. It?s something you can touch, that you can hold, that you can look at. And that?s all they have of him. It?s probably the most important thing in their lives.?

Using the Internet ? along with documents found at a local high school and library, ? Fike obtained information about the medal?s recipient, including his draft out of junior college and the mission liberating a French village during World War II, that would ultimately lead to his death.

The amateur investigator eventually found Piccoli?s surviving relatives ? including his sister, Adeline Rockko of Watertown, N.Y., to whom he placed a call.

Through the research, Fike says, he got to know the family so well that upon making contact, he reminded Adeline of things she?d forgotten and was able to even share things about her brother she?d never known.

?I had the conversation with Zac and it was like opening a door in a closet that?s full of secrets ? memories and everything just floats out,? Adeline said. ?And the memories came back, they were very vivid.?

The connection has become the foundation for a close relationship between the two families, and set the groundwork for a first-ever Piccoli family reunion back in 2011, when dozens came together for a formal presentation of Corrado Piccoli?s Purple Heart.

?I felt throughout the process that [Piccoli] was communicating with me,? Fike said. I really felt like I was the messenger in the return, and in essence, it brought his family back together. So, I feel that I am a part of him and his family. And I do consider him a brother in arms again. I consider them a second family.?

A third-generation soldier, Fike is well aware?of the sentimental significance of the Purple Heart medal. Since 1932, it has been presented to families of soldiers who lost their lives in combat, as well as to soldiers who have been wounded in action ? as was the case with Zac, who was wounded in Afghanistan on Sept. 11, 2010.

?I?m just glad to be here,? Fike said. ?I?m glad I can be on a wall of honor in my mom?s home. And I would hope one day, if my medal was lost, that somebody would do the same thing that I do.?

Since the return of Piccoli?s medal, Fike has returned five more. He acquires them in a variety of places, including Craigslist and nursing homes ? he even was given one from a landfill. He?s working on returning half a dozen others ? and says he comes across more every week. Through word of mouth, Fike has become the go-to resource for tracking and returning lost medals. ?

?People from that generation ... are passing by the day, he said. ?Unfortunately [the medals] are misplaced during moves over the years. They?re sold by family members that don?t either understand or appreciate the value of them?so they end up in antique shops and things of that nature.?

In fact, Fike?s mother originally picked up the valuable artifact at the antique shop because she thought her son would appreciate the addition to his collection. Fike, quite the antique aficionado, has been collecting memorabilia for years ? including photographs and record players.

Joyce knew her son would appreciate the medal ? but had no idea the extent to which he?d go to return it.

?I thought he was going to keep it in his collection, so it surprised me that he has done this and it?s taken off the way it has,? she said. ?I?m very proud of him for doing it. When I met these families and heard their stories, he?s done the right thing instead of keeping them in his collection.?

As for Fike, he is committed to continuing to his own mission of restoring these lost medals.

?I?ve always had that passion ? even before, you know, I was wounded. I just grew up in a military family and I learned to appreciate military service and sacrifice. I think it adds to the allure of the story, absolutely. But I don?t think it makes me any more inclined to do what I do.??

PFT: Browns show promise vs. Packers

DeMaurice SmithAP

All too often, a lawsuit gets focused on a collateral issue.? And that collateral issue then takes on a life of its own.

That?s precisely what has happened over the last 48 in the bounty cases.

The NFLPA has, at the direction of Judge Helen G. Berrigan, submitted information regarding the date on which the NFLPA asked the league to delay the imposition of discipline on players.? Judge Berrigan asked for that information via a Wednesday court order in an apparent effort to confirm (some may say ?call B.S. on?) an August 10 claim by NFL outside counsel Gregg Levy that Commissioner Roger Goodell was ready on March 21 to impose discipline on the players and the non-players, but that Goodell waited as to the players at the request of the union.

The question has relevance because the players believe that statements made by Goodell about the players on March 21 reflect that he had made up his mind before conducting a full investigation and rendering a reasoned decision.? If he already had made his decision as of March 21, the statements provide no proof of bias or partiality.? (Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma also believes that the statements fall beyond the scope of the labor deal and are thus subject to a defamation claim, if they were made before the investigation had completed.)

Before I go any farther, I need to be clear on one thing.? I?m not suggesting or saying or implying that the NFL deliberately gave false information to the court.? Routinely, lawyers who didn?t experience the events that they?re trying to wedge into a predetermined narrative make unintended factual mistakes.? It?s one of the byproducts of the duty of zealous representation; sometimes, the zeal causes a lawyer to accidentally drift beyond that which is real.

Moreover, direct conflicts in sworn testimony don?t mean that someone is committing perjury.? Humans often perceive their communications very differently, as proven time and again by the ?grocery list? experiment in grade school, where the teacher tells Kid No. 1 to get ?milk, eggs, bread? and by the time it gets to Kid No. 27 the lists consists of ?purple, monkey, meatball.?

I?m saying this because the curve ball thrown by Judge Berrigan has quickly become a full-blown, he-said/she-said clusterfudge.

On Thursday, the NFL explained in its submission that the NFLPA asked for a 60-day delay of all discipline on March 7, that the NFL later declined to delay discipline ?especially with regard to discipline of the club and non-player employees,? and that Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith later agreed verbally ?to address first discipline of the club and then to afford the NFLPA a reasonable opportunity to conduct its own investigation and express its views before [Goodell] imposed discipline on the players.?

Predictably (given the inability of the NFL and NFLPA to agree on anything right now), Smith disagrees with Goodell?s contention.? ?At no point did I reach some sort of agreement with Mr. Goodell that, in exchange for delaying the NFL?s imposition of discipline on players, the NFLPA would conduct its own investigation and share the results of that investigation with the NFL,? Smith said in a sworn statement filed with the court on Friday, a copy of which PFT has obtained.

Smith also takes advantage of the opportunity to fire another shot at the league?s overall process.

?I stressed to Mr. Goodell that it was important for the accused players and the NFLPA to have access to the League?s information, and that the information be presented so that the accused players could respond before any punishment was imposed,? Smith said.? ?Finally, I emphasized that transparency was important, so that if there were clear evidence of a pay-to-injure program, the NFLPA could work with the NFL to stop such behavior and ensure it never happens again.? The cooperation and transparency that I requested, and that I firmly believed was in the best interest of all parties, was not provided and to date, it has never been provided.?

Taking it all one level higher, Browns linebacker Scott Fujita executed an affidavit in which he directly disputes the claim that Goodell was ready to discipline the players as of March 21.? Fujita testifies that he called Goodell on ?approximately? March 20, because Fujita was ?disturbed that my name had been leaked in media reports concerning the NFL?s investigation.?? Fujita then testifies that, during the call, ?Goodell told me he would be coming down hard with punishments on the Saints coaches, but that with respect to Saints players, he was not quite sure what he had on them, and that player punishments therefore would take some time.?

In other words, the NFLPA believes that Goodell?s sworn statement was unintentionally inaccurate, at best.

Now that Judge Berrigan has the information, it?s not known what the next step will be.? She could, in theory, convene an evidentiary hearing, at which time Goodell, Smith, Fujita, and perhaps others would testify in open court ? and Judge Berrigan would then decide based on their words and demeanor what really happened.

She also could try to resolve the factual dispute based on the information that has been provided.? Given that every move she makes now eventually will be scrutinized by an appellate court, don?t be surprised if she takes the safer course and creates a full factual on which her eventual decisions will be based, by ordering that the parties and witnesses give live testimony.

And if Judge Berrigan decides that a decision as to the players hadn?t been made as of March 21, she could be much more likely to find that Goodell?s March 21 statements fall beyond the protections of the labor deal with respect to Vilma?s defamation claim ? and that Goodell?s March 21 statements about player responsibility reflect bias and partiality in the overall process, given that the statements came in the absence of a completed investigation.

Remember, Judge Berrigan said last week, ?If I can [rule in Vilma's favor] legally, I will.? If I find a way, I will.?? This factual dispute, if resolved in favor of Vilma and the other players, could give Berrigan the path that she has been looking for.

Regardless of how it all turns out, it?s obvious based on the traffic and comments generated by the articles regarding the March 21 issue that this obscure quirk in the facts has caught not only Judge Berrigan?s attention, but also yours.

Offline Business Networking

Before I start todays post on offline business networking, I would like to direct your attention to the post that I read recently, ?5 Ways to Find and Leverage Expert Bloggers?, by Hannah Howard.? It is a good example of building relationships with other bloggers as well as your audience.?? Onward to todays post.

You?ve probably heard the saying ?It?s not what you know but who you know? right? This is true in business whether you are an online entrepreneur or own a brick and mortar store.

What if your business is solely online like that of a virtual assistant? Is offline networking still relevant? Of course it is important unless you never talk to anyone outside your computer screen.

Offline Business Networking Strategies

What is Offline Business Networking? ? The first step to offline buisiness networking is to know what it is that you are doing. What is business offline business networkingnetworking?

According to a definition on Wikipedia ?Business networking is a socioeconomic activity by which groups of like-minded businesspeople recognize, create, or act upon business opportunities.?

So, if it is a group activity you can?t be wasting away in your home office. You have to put on some real clothes and go meet people. (I guess pajamas and a robe would not be appropriate.)

Build Your Network ? Before you go out and meet anyone you need to build a networking list.

This list will consist of people you know like friends, relatives, former employers or supervisors, classmates and neighbors.

You can make a spreadsheet, as you?ll be referring to this list often. You?ll want to list the name of the resource, their contact information like their phone number, address, and email.

As this is for offline networking you don?t have to list the social networks they belong to.

Contact Your Resources Daily ? You should have a pretty decent list by now, about twenty-five or more contacts.

Your next step is to contact them. You might want to create a contact form to track your activity.

It should include the name of the person or organization, the address, phone number, email, who referred you, when you contacted them, what you discussed, follow-up activities and any referrals they gave you.

Each day you want to contact at least 10 people. Make it your goal to get 2 new referrals from each contact.

With these referrals try to make 2 face-to-face meetings each week.

Find Out Where Everyone Is ? There are a number of places to meet potential businesspeople.

You can try your local chamber of commerce, check local meetups, ask around at social clubs and churches or see what other home based business owners are doing in your area.

The local coffeehouse is always a neutral meeting ground for quick meetups. If you?re nervous about meeting someone new try to plan out what your goal is first.

Pre-plan some questions and remember that you are building relationships, not selling anything.

Write Thank-You Letters or Emails ? Just as if you had a regular 9 ? 5 job it is polite to send a quick thank-you to your referral and to the contact that referred you to them.

Again a form might help you keep track of who referred whom so that this will be fairly easy for you. A good habit to get into is to keep the thank-you notes in your car.

This way as soon as the meeting is over you can write a quick note and send it off in the mail. Alternatively you can also send a quick email thanking them for their time via your smart-phone.

Often It's Not the Prostate Cancer That is Fatal

quitting smokingAn important piece of health news says that. for men diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is often not the tumor that will lead to death. In fact, these men are more likely to suffer fates from preventable conditions such as heart disease. This leads to important health advice for anyone who finds themselves in this position.

PLUS: Scientists Zero in on Prostate Cancer Cause

The study, out of Harvard University, is the largest study to date that looks at how men with prostate cancer die. The positive news to emerge is that making healthy lifestyle changes can play a big role in managing the disease, and living longer.

One in six men develops this disease, making it the most common form of cancer in America. While incidences of the disease have increased, death rates due to prostate cancer have fallen in Western countries. This has much to do with earlier detection, and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. This has led to more men diagnosed with lower-risk forms of the disease.

The new study looked at two huge registries of data totaling 700,000 men over 40 years or so in Sweden and the U.S. During this time, prostate cancer accounted for 52% of all reported deaths in Sweden and 30% of reported deaths in the U.S. among men with prostate cancer. But, only 35% of Swedish men and 16% of U.S. men diagnosed with prostate cancer died from the actual disease.

In fact, risk of death from heart disease was the same as that of the cancer in their bodies. The study showed that healthy lifestyle changes such as shedding pounds, exercising more, and quitting smoking may in fact be more important ? all things considering ? than treatment for prostate cancer.

The takeaway message from this study is actually very important. A diagnosis of cancer, in this day and age, does not necessarily mean a death sentence. What is more of a death sentence is no longer looking after your health, and putting your heart in jeopardy. Eat right, exercise regularly ? this mantra becomes even more important when your body is faced with a serious condition it must fend off.

It's (Barely) Legal (Glen Ashman's Blog)

From: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A $50 million lawsuit against the City of Stone Mountain (Georgia)?accuses its police of conducting hundreds of illegal traffic stops.? According to the federal complaint filed last week, police wrote traffic tickets based on readings from a laser speed detection device that had an expired certification. The citations were written between Dec. 29 and March 28. Federal law requires that law enforcement agencies have their speed detection equipment checked and certified each year. Stone Mountains' detectors were re-certified in late March. The lawsuit alleges that Stone Mountain police allowed the department's certification to lapse, but kept writing tickets and retaining more than $100,000 in "ill-gotten" fees and fines. Also, in more than a dozen cases, people stopped in Stone Mountain went to jail. Decatur attorney Jennifer Watts represents more than 200 people who were ticketed, and she said Stone Mountain police are continuing to prosecute the cases. "That's the part that trips me out," Watts told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "They know they are wrong, and they're still going ahead with prosecution..." In one case, a client who Watts declined to identify was on probation at the time of his traffic stop, and his driver's license, which he had gotten reinstated, still incorrectly reflected a revoked status. The man was arrested and spent 67 days in jail, she said. "He lost his job, he lost his apartment, [and] he lost his car because by the time he got out, [impounders] wanted so much for storage that it didn't make any sense for him to pay it to retrieve the car," Watts said. "He's basically living in a motel with four other people."

AVAYA IP Office ? Telephone Systems Specifically Designed ...

One of the keywords of modern consumerism is ? choice. A place in the not too faraway past, someone found that the best way to succeed in your global economy where individuals are more and more interested in buying new material points is to provide them with any multiplicity of choices. This approach turns the whole predicament into a numbers online game, and with enough alternatives available, it is only a matter of statistics that every client will eventually find something which he or she likes ample to spend money on.

The issue that small and moderate enterprises face because consumers of office goods, however, is a not enough such choice. Prior to the advent of Avaya IP Office and other comparable telephone systems, manufacturers basically had not yet transferred into the market for office telephone among smaller companies.
Even now, products like the AVAYA IP Office, which was designed through the ground up to be suitable for application in small, and medium enterprises, continue to be rare. The reason for this really is that manufacturers comprehend the big money to be in catering to the large companies that are able to pay so much more per system purchased. Such systems make the perfect boon to small, and medium enterprises, given that they offer smaller businesses the opportunity to obtain the same competing advantage when it comes to marketing and sales communications as large companies have had access to for years.
Another thing that is often taken to be an actuality of life to become accepted is that running down a product to match smaller businesses inevitably entails eliminating some of the capabilities and functionality via that product. Essentially, the principle that ?you find what you pay for? should apply. The manufacturers from the AVAYA IP Office fail to agree, nevertheless, and the telephone systems they have are every bit as fully-featured as those being sold for you to larger companies simply by other manufacturers.
Just like those systems usually purchased by huge companies, these telephone systems, besides being entirely featured office phone systems, offer a way to negotiate all of the communications routes within the company and centralize all of them. Centralized communications make the perfect benefit to any company, no matter how small or large it might be, given it eliminates the squandered productivity that formerly resulted from staff having to constantly switch from one form of connection to the next, each time additionally having to switch bodily mediums. Emails was needed on computers, cell phone calls had to be taken on the phone, and so on.
With the IP Office program, however, employees should be able to access all of their communications on a single device with their choosing, whether it be any laptop, desktop computer or possibly a cell phone. While this consolidation may not seem like an important change, in the long run, the particular productivity wasted insurance agencies so many disparate ways of communication adds up, and saving upon that wasted efficiency will surely help to increase the organization profits.
