The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its annual obesity map this week. Texas, with a 30.4% obesity rate and an affinity for odd fried items (i.e. beer, bubblegum, latte, butter), ties Kentucky for the tenth most obese state in the country. We join eleven other states with obesity prevalence above 30%. The most obese state is Mississippi, with an obesity rate of 34.9%.
The least obese states include Colorado (20.7%), Hawaii (21.8%), and Massachusetts (22.7%). No state met the Healthy People 2010 goal of 15% obesity prevalence.
The study was conducted via telephone poll, in which researchers surveyed adults on height and weight. If these survey takers are anything like those online daters with a tendency to shave off a few pounds, then there?s a definite possibility of underreporting. The researchers then calculated body mass index (BMI) based on data collected. BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
Interesting enough, Austin was ranked one of the most fit cities in the U.S. by Shape magazine in 2010. Apparently, Lady Bird Lake, Barton Springs, the Greenbelt, and other outdoorsy places counteract Kerbey Lane queso, fried chicken-topped donuts, and burgers topped with pulled pork.
